Recommendation: Need Police enforcement (ticket Nickerson traffic that blocks the intersection). This is also a great candidate for one of those new red light cameras. We will assess the area and deploy the most appropriate type and amount of traffic enforcement there possible. Also, thank you for supporting our Department's Red Light Program. We believe that this program is a positive step toward pedestrian and vehicular safety. We certainly understand how traffic backed into the intersection presents a problem for eastbound drivers on Florentia trying to enter the intersection. With our signal having to control approaches from six different directions and so close to the bridge, this is a challenging intersection to work on and operate. I looked into your suggestion for removal of the "No Right Turn on Red" restriction in place for the eastbound Florentia approach to Nickerson Street. I found, unfortunately, that this would not be a good strategy for helping Florentia in getting through the intersection. This would invite drivers from Florentia to make right turns and cross through 3rd Avenue North traffic that has a green light- and would create a safety problem. We do, however, have an idea we are looking into that may have some promise in preventing eastbound Nickerson traffic from crowding into and blocking the intersection. We have a message sign above the intersection that turns on and lets eastbound drivers know when the bridge is open. We are looking to see if it can be programmed to light up and provide an additional message - "Do Not Block the Intersection" - during peak commute times. As I find out if this can be done, I will let you know. If you have additional thoughts or questions, please feel free to contact me directly at (206) 684-5727. I will be happy to assist you further. Sincerely, Mike Morris-Lent Traffic Operations Engineer Seattle Department of Transportation (206) 684-5727 mike.morrislent@seattle.gov ] ****************************[22 Jul 2008 16:49:13 EDT] Report edited/modified by: Rebecca Slivka [1] |
