Bicycle Watchdog Hounding authorities to make your ride safer!
Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' But conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but because conscience tells one it is right. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Status: Active
Location: Interurban trail crossing 128th St SE, Everett, WA
Description: at the crosswalk where trail crosses 128th, the crossing signal for pedestrian and bicycle traffic has been removed. This is a very busy intersection and traffic does not tend to stop for bicycles or pedestrians waiting in the crosswalk. Vehicles exiting freeway and turning right are the biggest offenders, and there is no longer a signal to indicate when bicycles or pedestrians should cross.

Thomas forwarded it to my office for response. There has been crosswalk revision in the vicinity, but it was on the northbound on and off ramps intersection, not the southbound on and off ramps intersection as indicated in the electronic report. The crosswalk revisions are related to converting the northbound offramp to two right turn lanes from one right turn lane. We removed the crosswalk on the east leg of the intersection because of concern that right turning traffic from the center lane would be less likely to notice pedestrians in the crosswalk. We felt removing the crosswalk here would create relatively minor inconvenience as the signalized intersection to the east at 3rd is a short distance away and already serves as the connection to the continuation of the Interurban Trail to the south. Your concern may relate to how trail users now get to and from the trail as it continues northward from 128th. The trail goes north from 128th on the west side of I-5, requiring users to cross the northbound on-ramp. Crossing the portion of the leg used by eastbound left turns is controlled by the signal, while the portion crossing the westbound right turn is unsignalized. This movement has generated a few questions . It's a semi-free right turn movement with westbound stopping when eastbound left turns are going. Though this portion of the crossing is not signalized it shouldn't present much problem as approaching drivers have a good line of sight to any peds or bicycles that may be crossing, have to slow to complete the right turn, and westbound traffic will periodically be forced to stop/yield when eastbound left turns are going. We appreciate your feedback and would appreciate any follow-up comments you may have. We've had a couple of calls about this in the last few weeks and may need to revisit to see if there's anything else we should consider.
