Hazard Report #102

Status: Active Location: Burke-Gilman Trail through Lake Forest Park Description: Bogus stop signs for BGT users. Numerous driveways and street-ends cross the Burke-Gilman Trail through Lake Forest Park. Most of these crossings have Stop signs for trail (bike) traffic, even though there are hundreds of times more bikes on the trail than crossing traffic. Stop signs for trail traffic should either be replaced by Yield signs (as are used in other similar crossings of the BGT) or removed altogether. These Stop signs are routinely ignored by bicycles, which sets a bad precedent (bicyclists learn the stop signs are to be ignored instead of obeyed). Cross Streets: from 147th to 160th Direction: Facility Type: Bike Path City: Lake Forest Park County: King State: WA Lat/Long: 47.740876, -122.284786 Geocoded? Recommendation: Stop signs for trail traffic should either be replaced by Yield signs (as are used in other similar crossings of the BGT) or removed altogether. Comments: There has been an ongoing battle to get these bogus stop signs removed. King County has been trying since 2000 to bring this section of the BGT up to current standards by widening the paved section, removing bad bollards (done), and changing/removing stop signs. Lake Forest Park (or a vocal minority of adjacent property owners) has fought them every step of the way. A recent (Aug 2007) decision by the Central Puget Sound Growth Management Hearings Board seems to signal that the fight may now be over and the County will finally be able to proceed with long-planned improvements.
